The Dangerous Items Located Right in Your Pantry

With the percentage of Americans suffering from obesity continuing to rise, many consumers are looking to be more vigilant in their grocery choices. While many people know to check for calorie count, protein, and carbs, what is less known is the need to check for chemical additives in the ingredients list. Some of the most worrisome additives include:

  1. MSG – There are over 40 different versions of this chemical additive, which is most similar to the taste of salt. It can be found in many different foods, including hotdogs, salad dressings, and soups, as well as fast food. MSG is considered a neurotoxin because it can damage nerve cells.
  2. High Fructose Corn Syrup – This chemical has been attributed to the number one cause of obesity, and can lead to diabetes. It is most similar to sugar, but its popularity in many food items stems from it being a cheaper alternative. It can be found in non-diet sodas, candy, and cereal.
  3. Partially Hydrogenated Oil – This chemical is one of the primary sources of trans fats, a highly dangerous fat that contributes to coronary heart disease, which is a leading cause of death. It is found in margarine, vegetable shortening, chips, and crackers.
  4. Salt – While it is an element found on the periodic table, and is helpful in many parts of the body such as maintaining blood pressure, too much salt can make your heart work harder, making veins and arteries constrict. Sodium is found in most products, but products such as packaged soups, condiments, and preserved meats contain higher amounts of sodium than average products.
  5. Food Coloring – While adding a fun twist to many types of foods, the risks of food coloring may outweigh the benefits. Linked to cancers, tumors, and hyperactivity, food coloring can be found in jellies, juices, sodas, baked goods, and colorful cereal.

The convenience of packaged foods greatly minimizes time and energy spent in the kitchen, but the chemical additives contained in many grocery shelf products may cause serious health issues. Instead of packaged foods with chemical additives, look for healthy, organic, simple ingredient packaged food like Pure Organic bars and snacks.
